Why I try...

By Team Member Kristie Peressini

"I may not be the lithest, the most talented, or have the fastest time in the field but I have passion and courage, and sometimes that is enough to do something extraordinary." Lauren Fleshman

In July of 2003 I ran my first 3 miles ever without stopping (later with a thing called Garmin, it was only 2.8 miles). I had watched the highlights of the Missoula Marathon and decided to try the marathon the next year. In December of 2003, just 4 months later I ran my first 1/2 marathon. The Las Vegas Rock n Roll! I had never ran that far and neither had anyone in my immediate family.

I was 42 years young. We were all excited to have me finish and party with the music and other runners at the finish line. I was so worn out and tired, my feet hurt, my stomach ached and I couldn't wait, and could hardly walk to the car, to get home to my bathtub and wanted sleep. I looked at all the other runners and had no idea how in the world they would want to run a full marathon. At the time I didn't know there was such a thing called Ironman! I was home in bed recovering. My children and husband brought me tea, rubbed my feet and treated me like a hero. They couldn't believe that I could run that far.

Shortly after I came home excited that I found out this thing called triathlon! I was going to do a triathlon in 3 months. All I needed was a bike. I was given a bike and wetsuit for Christmas. I was so excited I clipped in my new shoes at the end of the hallway and pedaled down the hallway right into a wine rack and fell to the floor with the wine. This time I was laughed at. I guess I needed to learn to ride a bike again.

I asked my girlfriend to go to the lake to swim with me. I knew how to swim from a boat to the ski rope with a life jacket and back to the boat so how hard could it be to swim to the buoy at the lake? Just getting the wetsuit on is a story in itself but the panic of getting in the water on what looked like windiest day of the year with what seemed like 6 foot waves took all the encouragement and coaching from her to get me just 150 yards out and back.

Since that time, my oldest daughter has gone on to run 12 half marathons in a year. My son has done 1/2 marathons, marathons, Tough Mudders, Spartan Races and triathlons. My youngest daughter has done triathlons, took 4th place in an IM70.3. My husband has joined me in many marathons, half ironmans and 4 full ironmans.

THIS IS MY REASON WHY I continue to RACE LIKE A GIRL. I am a daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend, I am a girl! As a women we can have a positive influence on others, we are strong, we have passion, we have dreams. When I race I achieve all of these things and my passions, dreams and goals for other areas of my life are accomplished through my training and racing. I race like a girl to encourage others just like me to do what they can to to have the courage to run that first mile, to learn to ride a bike again or to get to that first buoy any way they can.
