Sprite of Friendship

Spirit of Friendship by Amy Carlson

What's not to love about Triathlon besides the yearly racerback tan line and empty bank account. There are many reasons to love and to have a love hate relationship with the sport. One of the things I personally love is the comradery. Comradery is defined as the spirit of friendship and community in a group.

Every Triathlete needs other Triathletes to talk endlessly about the next race season, the past race season, paces, goals, bad run days, nutrition, heart rate, coaching, training, etc. The list goes on and on. No one else wants to hear you chatter about how you shaved off 10 seconds per 100 in the pool, especially not your coworker. You might as well be speaking in code.

After four years of racing the friendships and associations I have made through the various clubs, studios and races is what I cherish most. Without them I'd be one lonely Triathlete. Nothing is more fun then talking about making plans to sign up for the next race, joining in on a group training day, getting the miles in together, encouraging each other daily and cheering on fellow athletes on race day.

I truly enjoy making new friends even if it is just for a few minutes during a race. It makes me happy to cheer others on. If you see a fellow Triathlete struggling a simple, "you've got this" can change how someone reaches the finish line. I've been known to yell, " kick it in" at the end of a race. It is a delight to see it when they hall ass and you both high five at the finish.

These are the best times of our lives. What better way to spend it then encouraging someone who loves what you love.

Being a member of IRLAG has brought so many wonderful people into my world and for that I am thankful. I encourage all triathletes to join a swimming, running, cycling or triathlon club. It is a way to gain knowledge about the sport, meet others with a common interest and be a part of the comradery.
