Injury and iracelikeagirl

By Team Member: Shannon Stefaniuk

Injury sucks. I have broken more bones than the average person and I am pretty familiar with patiently working through injury to get healthy again. But fracturing my pelvis has been a special kind of injury and has impacted me more than I anticipated. Especially since I hurt myself running; something I love and something that should be good for me. When I first started to feel some discomfort, I was in the middle of the #IRaceLikeaGirl #teamswimchallenge.

Once I realized that I could keep swimming as long as I used a pull buoy, I was extremely motivated to keep working hard. But near the end of the challenge I was informed that I had a “recent undisplaced fracture of the left inferior pubic ramus.” The only way to heal? Rest. And lots of it. So for the next couple of weeks I decided that wallowing was a great solution. Wallowing and baking - delicious, but not great for my already waning level of fitness...

As this fracture is taking longer than anticipated to heal, I am feeling pretty bummed as I watch my goals for the 2019 race season slip away. I have also been questioning how I can still participate as a member of the @IRaceLikeaGirl team if I cannot actually race this season? And then something pretty cool happened, I reached out to the team to get some advice on how others deal with injury, and the responses were incredibly positive and uplifting - which helped more than I expected.

Finding a tribe that understands what motivates you, the ups and the downs, has been awesome. Now I am living vicariously through my @IRaceLikeaGirl team mate’s accomplishments and feeling inspired while I wait (impatiently) to get out there and crush it again.
