New year, new team - why I race like a girl! By Sarah Cook

I’m not usually one for New Year’s resolutions. January is a good time to reset after the occasional indulgences and schedule disruptions of the holidays, but I know the perils of putting all of my goals in the resolution basket, and I try to avoid attaching unrealistic expectations to the flipping of the year on the calendar.

And all of this remains true. Once again, I’m not setting any resolutions for myself this year. My goals come as they come, and if it’s in winter, great, but if they’re in summer, also great. But I do have some changes to my training and racing that roughly coincide with the start of 2018, and I’m both excited and a little trepidatious to see how this year and racing season will shape up.

First, I’m venturing into this year for the first time as a self-coached triathlete. When I first started triathlon training, I knew I could use a lot of help and I sought out a coach. After about a year, through a series of fortunate events I ended up training with Rebecca, a coach who I really related to and who “got” me. All good things must come to an end, though, and Rebecca decided to retire from coaching at the end of 2017. I’m glad to continue calling her a friend, and I wish her the best as she now has the time she needs to focus on her own training and family life. I’ll always identify as a member of KR Endurance and plan to continue as a member of its community for the foreseeable future. But I also have come to know myself as a triathlete, and I’m going to take everything I’ve learned and try to apply it to creating my own training plan for the upcoming triathlon season.

I’ve decided to expand my horizons by joining the IRACELIKEAGIRL endurance team founded by pro triathlete, Angela Naeth. I’m excited to become a part of this triathlon-focused, women-centric squad. I remember volunteering on the run course at the inaugural Ironman Chattanooga in 2014 and watching Angela as she led the women’s field to her eventual victory, and I can’t wait to experience this community of women endurance athletes who have come together with her at the helm.

Why another team? Why this team? I love the sport of triathlon. I love getting out there and training and racing alongside other people out there doing the same crazy, fun, difficult thing I’m doing. I love encouraging people along the way. I love setting goals and experiencing the journey of trying to reach them. And I’ve reached the point where I realized that the way I train and race may not be the way someone else does it, but that there’s enough space in this sport for us all to do our own thing and support each other in the process. All of this is how I race like a girl. I can’t wait to set the wheels in motion for a great 2018!
