Finding a new triathlon community. By Sharon Perl-Olshvang

As a teenager in Israel, I was part of the National Swimming Team and was a champion in the 200 meter freestyle and 100 fly.

I always wanted to race in triathlon, but I didn’t enjoy bike riding so kept putting it off.

And then I got married, had children… and gained 80 pounds. Despite this, the triathlon dream was always there. After I give birth to my second child I decided to change my life.

First step was to lose weight. After 6 months, I lost 50 pounds. I also ended up getting divorced from husband and made the decision to spend my life with a woman.

Final step was to register for my first triathlon.

My first tri wasn’t easy but after crossing the finish line I was so happy that I promised myself to go all the way up to a full Ironman distance.

So I joined a local triathlon team and started to work with a coach.

In Israel, “team” means the group of people with a coach who meets for workouts. We had three runs, 2-3 bike workouts and 2-3 swim workout each week. The team was amazing and I made wonderful friends.

In August 2016, I moved with my family to Boston area. After the move I tried to find new tri home to train with. That’s when I found a link to an interesting team “IRACELIKAGIRL” and wanted to be part of amazing woman who don’t know each other but are still very supportive.

For me #racelikeagirl means to wake up very early to make my kids lunch before my morning workouts, to understand that a few more pounds will not stop me, to sometimes care about my bike color as much as I care about my performance, and to meet wonderful women who can juggle family and training while supporting one another.
