Why Triathlon?

By Team Member Kathry Shroff.

My triathlon career began last year at the age of 40. My first race was a local but popular sprint. Although I have always dabbled in all three triathlon disciplines, I was clueless that day. I showed up with my 15 year old road bike that I had only ridden a few times in the last 5 years. My wetsuit was pulled from storage. I prayed that I would not get a flat as I had no idea how to change a tube. I stalked others as they set up their transition areas. I was more than intimidated by all the fancy gear.

My training consisted only of my usual jogs through the park and a few steady swims. Despite panicking in the ocean and thinking my day was over before it even began, I had a respectable finish…for me. Most importantly, I had a blast. I was hooked. I loved every minute and wasted no time registering for two more races.

This year I have crazily committed to a half-ironman. I still don’t have all the fancy gear and am only beginning to learn about everything triathlon. I am jumping in headfirst without a lifejacket. I have no idea how I will juggle kids, a job and training.

I am rather confident that I will never qualify for Kona. I don’t know how long this “career” will even last. But I do know that I will try to push myself and enjoy the challenge while it lasts. I will be thankful to just be out there. If you see this middle aged mother of two in the back of the pack (maybe middle!), I will readily accept a high five as I race for fun and myself!
