TRIing my way to being a better Mum - by Emma Flessner (Team Member)

TRIing my way to being a better Mum - by Emma Flessner (Team Member)

I was never much of an individual sports athlete, playing a number of team sports at high levels including representing my country a few times. So when I made a personal goal to do a triathlon it took me a few months of reading articles and researching the sport to actually build up the courage to tell my now ex-wife. I was pregnant at the time so the idea was brushed it off as my crazy hormones talking as it took me a long time to accept the fact I had to take a step back from competitive semi-contact sports to have a child.

The personal goal sat in the back of my head for a few years after Rosie was born, in that time the severity of my PTSD was recognised along with other issues the marriage with Rosie’s other mum fell apart. I tried endlessly to get into triathlons but it wasn’t till I decided that if I was going to be the best version of myself for my little girl I had to be happy, and what made me happy was riding bikes and exercising. So I had a coffee with the well-respected local tri coach and jumped on board with the club that will soon become my family.

In the past 12 months I have rode the leg of an Olympic tri and completed an enticer and sprint distance. My anxiety from swimming is gone, I have maintained a healthy weight and have just passed my first month of all medication that was treating my PTSD. While not being the fastest of any discipline I am working my way up to completing my first Olympic and long course tri’s this year, also in that time my little girl has cheered me on and will do her first 1km fun run this March for breast cancer (she wants the pink finishers medal) along with becoming a little superfish at 3 years old.

I learnt about the IRLAG team early last year as I read endless online articles about triathlons and jumped at the chance to join the team this year, I am a better person already because of this sport and meeting a network of beautiful strong women can only teach me more about myself and becoming the best mum I can be for Rosie.
