Triathlon and Me

By Team Member Carolina Laurentiu Granja

My relationship with sport is not long, as a lot of shy people in high school, I hated sport, I was clumsy so I decided to say NO to sport in class, though at home I used to cycle with my mountain bike alone in the mountains.

At the age of 21 I meet a woman and we started running together, she was a marathoner, so I started running 5k 10k and then I switched to trail running, I managed to complete three mountain 30k races. I started to go out on mountain bike rides at the same time, and one day I met triathlon. Wow! What a discovery it was!

Suddenly I realized that, although I continue struggling against running, it wasn’t that bad swimming or cycling, on the contrary I was quite good as an amateur swimmer and cyclist. My first triathlon was a sprint in 2012 in Madrid; I swam and cycled well but had to run/walk my 5k. I continued with triathlons and cross county duathlons, some trail races and a half marathon, but not very seriously.

It was last year when I decided that I had to take another step, I decided to try to classify for national championships, Olympic distance, and I did it!! That was the most amazing experience ever, there I was, a 33 year-old-girl with all the elites, who mostly were 10 years younger than me, or more! With my second hand road bike, cheap helmet, wetsuit and old trainers… I suppose that I was so nervous that I fell of the bike the day before the big date! But next day there I was, in the water with all my wounds aching badly, ready to fight. I was lapped, of course, no surprise, but that wasn´t bad.

I love this sport because it gives me real wings, there nothing you can’t do as long as you desire it and you try hard. Last year experience showed me that no one can tell you that you can’t, that you are very old, that your bike is slow, that your wetsuit is too cheap or your trainers are too worn out.

So girls, keep “triing”, dream big and always race like a girl!
