Family as motivation - by Brianna Prinsloo

How'd you get into triathlon?

My triathlon journey started back in 2010. My husband used to ride mountain bikes a lot when we lived in South Africa and he always tried to get me to join him. Those single tracks scared me to death, but I told him when we moved back home I'd be willing to give cycling on the road a shot. A week after we landed in the US I had a road bike and immediately fell in love. 5 weeks later, after teaching myself to freestyle swim, (I already enjoyed running but never did it competitively) I did my first sprint triathlon and I was hooked! I finished my first sprint faster than my husband finished his first, and I'll never let him live that down!!

What's your motivation?

My motivation really comes from within thanks to my Dad. He was a college football player turned coach and then my coach in softball and volleyball. He's a man of few words and sports always brought us together and gave me a competitive spirit, and triathlon fuels and satisfies that desire still. My two boys also motivate me. I want to show them that when you work really hard you can achieve big things, and that persistence and practice pays off. Plus, if I'm taking time away from them to swim/bike/run and waking them up to drag them to a race then I dang sure better give everything I have in me!

Future race plans?

My next triathlon goal is to place top 3 in a sprint I'm doing next month and then to qualify for World's at Augusta 70.3 this year. Go big or go home right?? After Augusta I have my eyes on a half marathon PR and then a Boston BQ.

Advice for tri-newbies?

My advice to newbies is to just get out there and do it. Borrow some gear, don't think you have to spend a lot of money to do a race. Do one and then decide! As a newbie don't think you can't do it and don't be intimidated. Most triathletes are the nicest people you will ever meet - everyone was once a newbie!
